Finally the workgroup has found a suitable venue for YAPC::Europe::2001

Hogeschool Holland
Wildenborch 6
1112XB Diemen

It's very close to the XS4All building. Hogeschool Holland is situated close to the A10 motor way and Diemen-Zuid train station.

Date
YAPC::Europe::2001 will be

Thu Aug 2, Fri Aug 3, Sat Aug 4

Sponsors
The working group has asked everybody in the meeting to come forward if they know potential sponsors (preferably contact persons).

printed papers
lunches
?(Liz/Eric S)

unofficial Call for Papers
  • Merijn will give a talk on how he became a Perl5-porter
  • tutorials (Abigail just offered Parse::RecDescent)
  • Tim O'Reily did promise to open YAPC::Europe, it's time to take him up on his word (5 witnesses)
  • _Big_ names should be approached. Make it clear that if they promise to come, they _should_.

Site to watch
http://www.yapc.org/Europe/

Foundation/Association issue
This was raised briefly. This thing needs to sorted out quickly in order to have an official body that organizes YAPC::Europe::2001.

Abigail's JAPH talk
Abigail gave an inspiring talk about JAPH's and other strange signatures. The presentation can be reviewed at:

http://www.foad.org/~abigail/Perl/Talks/Japhs/

Many thanks to Abigail

Perl jobs in the Netherlands
Eric Smith shared his ideas on the subject. We should be:
  • stimulating demand from businesses
  • targeting the businesses
  • having a jobs section on our web site
It is decided that *jobs are allowed on the mailing list*.

Perl 5.6.1
Merijn predicts (again) a release of 5.6.1 within the next two to four weeks.

Perl 6
Johan predicts that there probably won't be a prototype release of Perl 6 by August.

Abigail explains that the whole 'piggyback on Perl 5' development idea could give problems because of the shortcomings of Perl 5, which are one of the reasons for Perl 6 in the first place.

It is awfully quit in terms of language development. It looks as if everyone is waiting for Larry.

Next meeting

Venue
XS4All (new offices, next to the old building)
Eekholt 42
1112XH Diemen

Date
The next meeting is on: March 6 2001.

Agenda
  • Merijn will give a talk about: 'The gray area between DBI and DBD'
  • Johan will report on 'The German Perl workshop', where he will give a talk on 'Object Oriented Perl Programming'. He is scheduled in parallel with Damian Conway.
Antony offered to host the April meeting (20010403) at RIPE.
